Testing
What is testing?
Testing refers to any measured metric that indicates your athletic performance level. It includes tasks like measuring the amount of weight you can lift, the height of your jump, your running speed, how your heart rate changes during different activities, and the quality of your movement, to name a few. Furthermore, measurements also cover aspects such as body shape, composition, blood pressure, and resting heart rate.
Why do we test?
Testing provides valuable insights into your current performance level, body characteristics, movement quality, and health metrics. This information can guide you and your coach in designing a new training program, evaluating the effectiveness of a completed training block, or serve as a record of your performance level for future reference when returning to play post-injury.
How to test?
Effective testing requires meeting certain criteria:
Specificity: Test selection should align with your goals. For example, assessing upper body strength is better done by testing the amount of weight a person can lift using their arms rather than just measuring grip strength or arm size.
Reliability: To accurately evaluate improvements after a training program, the test and related procedures must yield consistent results when repeated. Large variations in results not caused by changes in performance can lead to incorrect training decisions.
Sensitivity: Represents the smallest detectable change by the test and/or measurement device. Low sensitivity can hinder the observation of changes even if they are occurring. For example, small changes in body weight might go unnoticed when using a scale with a large minimum detectable change.
What is the outcome?
A well-performed testing process should produce a comprehensive report that includes all the necessary information to interpret the results and replicate the testing. This information may include the date and time of testing, pre-testing conditions (such as sleep and nutrition), device details (including model, setup, and units), testing procedures (for example, warm-up and rest duration), and in some cases, even comparison to average results of the relevant population.
